Strategy Content: Tournament Report by Scott Seaver
posted on 06/13/12
Hey everyone, Scott Seaver here! I have been commissioned to write an article for the JCS after winning the TCG player silver TCQ down in Orange City. With that said, I’ll get right into the meat and potatoes.
The Deck
I ran a special wolf run deck for the tournament. This deck, built by EdB, outclasses the traditional wolf run deck in every way. Would I rather ride into battle on a horse or tank?
Well, here is the tank:
MAIN DECK
4 Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite 4 Primeval Titan 4 Solemn Simulacrum
Creatures [12]
2 Gideon Jura 1 Karn Liberated
Planeswalkers [3]
2 Beast Within 4 Day of Judgment 2 Oblivion Ring 2 Pristine Talisman 4 Rampant Growth 4 Sphere of the Suns 1 White Sun's Zenith
Spells [19]
4 Cavern of Souls 4 Forest 3 Inkmoth Nexus 2 Kessig Wolf Run 1 Mountain 3 Plains 4 Razorverge Thicket 1 Rootbound Crag 4 Sunpetal Grove
Lands [26]
SIDEBOARD
2 Celestial Purge 3 Divine Offering 2 Ghost Quarter 1 Karn Liberated 1 Oblivion Ring 2 Thrun, the Last Troll 3 Timely Reinforcements 1 White Sun's Zenith
How I chose this deck
I chose this deck for a couple of reasons:
- Backwater competition. Though I was surprised to see many top notch grinders in this desolate town, I expected to see a bunch of locals. What do locals run? They run decks that fold to over the top decks and sweepers. Sometimes magic isn’t a question of who is the smarter or luckier player, but the player that brings the right weapon. Same reason that you don’t bring a spoon to a knife fight.
- Solid game plan. This deck tries to power out a T4 uncounterable Elesh Norn. Your little dudes… dead. Your large creatures… small.
Matchups
Round 1 was against RDW. 2-0
Round 2 was against Zombie Pod. 2-0
Round 3 was against Restoration Delver (GerryT’s and Gindy’s list) 2-0
Round 4 was against Ryland and his WRR deck. We drew and got pizza J
Round 5 was my win and in against Brad Sesit. He was undefeated so he graciously scooped me into top 8.
Round 6 ID.
Quarter Finals was against Jim Bishop and his WRR deck. 2-0
Semifinals were against solar flare. I forgot his name but he’s a local ringer that won a few cash tournaments with a recent 1st place at a local $500. 2-1
Finals match was against Restoration Delver. 2-1
Sideboard Strategy
Delver: -4 solemn, -1 karn, -1 white sun. +3 timely, +2 thrun, +1 oblivion ring
Reasoning: I want solid blockers, and an extra way to get rid of sword. Divine doesn’t come in against this deck, because they are not blasting you with a t2 sword. The last thing you want is to be getting beat down by a Geist and you holding a grip of sword destruction. Also, if they board out swords, however unlikely, you won’t have dead cards.
Zombies: -4 solemn, -1 karn, -1 white sun. +2 purge, +3 timely, +1 oblivion ring.
I didn’t board in divines against the zombie pod player. He also boarded out his pods. Win/win I guess.
R/G Aggro: -4 solemn, -1 karn, -1 white sun, -3 primeval, -2 cavern. +3 timely, +3 divine, +2 thrun, +2 ghost quarter, +1 oblivion ring.
If you blow up their swords and blow up their dudes, they can NOT win. Try and save your beast within and rings for things that Day of Judgment can’t clear. They can’t conscript a thrun; he blocks all day and survives your own wraths.
RDW: Derp
Wolf Run: -2 cavern, -1 Gideon, -1 Elesh Norn. +1 white sun, +1 karn, +2 ghost quarter.
It could also be correct to -2 Gideon to keep all 4 Elesh Norns.
Solar Flare/Control: -2 Elesh Norn, -1 Gideon. +1 white sun, +1 karn, +1 oblivion ring.
Changes I would make to the deck
I would swap the oblivion ring in the sideboard for a third beast within. I want to destroy permanents, permanently. Sometimes the oblivion ring gets smashed and their threat gets released. I would rather have my threat ringed then their threat released, most of the time.
I would also swap the white sun’s with entreat. THAT CARD IS THE MAD NUTS.
Props
- Backwater town, but sweet shop and cool owner
- Ryeland Bernard, Brad Sesit, Brad’s team, Jeff Hyle, and Jim Bishop, made the day. Some of Florida’s most disciplined grinders.
- Getting scooped into top 8
- Pizza bigger than my head
Slops
- Being so sleepy that I took a nap in between rounds.
What did we learn today?
We learned that we must play an amazing deck to be a successful grinder. Choose a deck that has already proven itself to win events… a net deck. Leave the spicy brews at your local FNM.
Well, that’s all from me for now and until next time, play tight and get lucky!

Breaking Bad Habits: Philosophy 101
Hello folks and welcome to the first installment of Breaking Bad Habits, a series where I’m going to try and explain my sometimes unorthodox thought process for limited Magic the Gathering. For those of you who don’t know me I’ve been playing Magic for almost 14 years now, most of that time spent figuring out which 22 to 24 cards to play out of my draft pool. Don’t get me wrong ill occasionally pick up a 60 cards and play in fnm, but I’m the guy who will show up at nationals just for the side drafts (As a side note this is article my opinion, and is by no means the only way to be successful at limited or a do this not that guide).
When I first started drafting I used an acronym for pick order that most players adhere to, BREAD. Bombs, Removal, Efficient cards, Aggressive threats, and Dregs. While this is a great basis to be consistent, I’ve found that picking cards that fit deck synergy, curve, and play style almost always mesh together as a better deck. What I mean is just because you open fireball doesn’t mean you should automatically take it because it’s the best removal spell in the pack, sometimes the cudgel troll is just better in your red green aggressive deck. In all honesty, most removal spells are overrated.
The thing about limited is under all of the subtle combos and combat tricks it comes down to who can play the most threats. Creatures put pressure and make your opponent make decisions, whereas removal is extremely reactive. Picking Chandra’s Outrage over Sengir Vampire is not uncommon or particularly bad, because the outrage removes most threats including the vampire. But what if you draw the outrage and they don’t have him in play? Do you cast it on a random 2/2 flier putting you on a clock just to have them slam the sengir down the next turn? What if they on the curve play the 4/4 vamp and you are stuck with the doom blade you took over Serra Angel pick one and the outrage is nowhere to be found? What if the sengir player is black white and has been representing Stave Off all game? Do you call his bluff and end up cold if he actually has it? That’s a really bad spot to be in, and it’s always better to have the opponent making difficult decisions, because sometimes they just make the wrong ones.
I’ll say it again; being proactive is how you win. Recently I was going over pick orders with a few people for M12, and the pack I opened had Day of Judgment and Overrun as the only notable first picks. To me the obvious pick here is Overrun, but to almost everyone else it was Day of Judgment. Why? Granted board sweepers can just blow out your opponent, especially when they don’t know you have it, casting Overrun just wins the game where Day of Judgment stops you from losing. Obviously if you have zero board presence you will be wishing that you picked DoJ, but that is a very polarized situation where even casting the card may not be enough to win. In a core set, where both sides tend to build up creatures more often, Overrun just breaks the stalemate either killing them or forcing them to lose almost everything blocking your guys.
Efficient utility spells are also often picked after removal when the utility is just better. An example is the aforementioned Stave Off, which I feel is extremely underrated. If its 4th or 5th pick and the pack has Shock and Stave Off left, most players take the shock there, but I’m taking the protection spell most of the time. While there are certainly situations where shock is an all star, like when you need to get rid of that pesky Merfolk Looter or Gideon’s Lawkeeper, past that you usually have to make an obvious block or 2 for 1 yourself to get value from the card late in the game. Stave Off on the other hand protects from just about every removal spell, can save an attacking or blocking guy from a combat trick, and can sometimes just give protection to swing for the win. Cards like Act of Treason and from scars block; Quicksilver Geyser can also be way more devastating than strict removal. Generating huge amounts of tempo by end of turn bouncing 2 4 cost guys or taking the 5 drop they cast to try and stabilize can just end the game.
Whatever you do, don’t go to your local shop and draft 18 creatures with no removal spells after reading this. Removal is still necessary and still has to be picked high, since everyone else at the table will be snatching it all up quickly. Just make sure to consider your deck and the quality of the removal spell before making the pick. Mind Control, Doom Blade, and Oblivion Ring should still be almost always picked first, since they will always be able to remove threats. Maybe pass on that Sorin’s Thirst, Arachnus Web, and Shock (which all can be unspectacular at times) to fill your curve out.
For what it’s worth, hopefully this helped shed some light on a different way to look at picks and will make you think more abstractly. Tune in next week where I’ll be going over reading and sending signals, along with what creatures to pick over others.
Until then

Friday night, September 23rd we will hold a short, 4 round standard constructed tournament. This will permit us to hold registration at 11:30 am for our Midnight Innistrad Sealed Prerelease Tournament. That’s right! At 12:01 am on Saturday, September 24th we will hold a sealed event! The first 48 players will receive a prerelease promo. We will hold a second sealed event that day at 1pm for $25 and an Innistrad booster draft for $15 at 7 pm. Coming in October, the Innistrad League begins Sunday, October 2nd, 2011 at 1pm. The Innistrad League will begin as a pack war/limited competition using Innistrad booster packs that expands over six weeks into a sealed/limited format casual play event. The kick-off event will occur on both Sunday, October 2nd at 1pm and Tuesday, October 4th at 6:30 pm. Innistrad League play will continue every Sunday and Tuesday thereafter until Sunday, October 13th. It begins as a pack war competition for week 1. In week 1 you purchase 1 booster pack (sorry no discounts on packs for the Innistrad League) and add 3 of each basic land type to the pack (we provide the basic land but ask if you can please return them once you are done). You then play your matches against up to five other opponents per week for 6 weeks. You may play any of those five matches on either Sundays or Tuesdays. You receive 1 point for playing in the match and 2 points for winning a best of three game match. You may play the same opponent again, but you receive no additional League points from that opponent until you play them again in the following League week.
After you are finished with each succeeding week, you can purchase one additional booster pack from Jax Card Singles (you may not provide your own booster pack. You must purchase the pack at no discount from JCS). You then can modify the contents of you deck to become a 40-card minimum deck with. Make sure that you have your packs and points tracked on the League poster. You are responsible for keeping your deck between League weeks. You may not alter the contents of your deck with any cards except those that come in the packs given through the Innistrad League. This is a sanctioned, casual MTG event.
Players joining the league late can still catch up to the current match cap. For example, during the fourth week of the league, a player joining then can purchase 4 booster packs then play up to 20 matches right away. Limiting the number of matches also helps spread out play over the six weeks of the league, encouraging players to keep coming back to JCS for more play. Make sure your points are recorded on the League tracking sheet to qualify for the finals.
Players pair themselves. Check on the League tracking poster to find out who else is playing in the Innistrad League and grab them whenever you can for a League match. Remember you receive 2 points for winning the first match and 1 point if you lose the first match. No additional points are generated from the same opponent until the following week.
On Sunday, November 13th at 1 pm, we will hold the Innistrad League Finals. The top 8 players in the Innistrad League that are present at that time will be granted free entry to a 3 round Swiss sanctioned limited competitive tournament using your Innistrad League deck. The top 4 players of this tournament will win the League Prize (more details to come). Also, the top 4 players with the most accumulated Innistrad League points present at the time will also receive the League Prize. Compete in The Arena!
posted on 05/19/11
The Mirrodin Besieged War League has come and gone. We now have The Arena at Jax Card Singles (JCS). The Arena is open to all games all the time. You can even compete in The Arena over a game of Ascension, which we now have at JCS. To play in The Arena, each player must have the same format of deck/game. For example, two players could compete in The Arena with their Legacy decks. Each player pays one-half of the prize up front and may place the entry fee onto their tab. Players may compete for any prize for sale at JCS, even a Jace the Mind Sculptor, although the most common Arena prize will be one booster pack. Each player puts up $2 in advance to compete for a booster pack. They then compete in a match (best of 3 games for Legacy, Pokemon, etc. or one game for Two-Headed Giant, Commander, Munchkin, etc.). Whoever wins the match gets the prize.
The Arena now covers Commander League as well. Commander League is now free to play in, but no longer tallies points or generates prizes. This is all the more reason to play in The Arena. For example, a table of 6 players could pay $2 each to play one Commander match with the winner getting 3 booster packs (6 players x $2 each = 3 booster packs). Then if another Commander game starts up, everyone has the option to play for free or compete in a separate Arena match. Please note that if members of a group choose to compete in The Arena, then all players of that group game must pay to play in The Arena.
Once you and your opponent are done with your match, see a JCS staff member for the winner’s prize. Then mark each of your names onto The Arena tracking poster on the wall and mark one match point beside each player’s name (win or loss). Get 15 match points and receive a WPN Foil Promo (Masters Call and Plague Myr are the current WPN Promos). Commander matches receive two points per match. Stay tuned to JCS on Facebook and Twitter to get free Arena points!
